After-school Nature and Gardening at 305/A&L United - OUTDOORS!
Registration now open.
United kids will discover nature and gardening in the school garden and in the neighborhood! They will plant and harvest organic food, learn about neighborhood trees, learn to make plant-based sprays, learn to recognize and help native and endangered plants and explore the coolest trees, animals, plants, and fungi in the neighborhood, including the Hattie Carthan garden (adjacent to the school playground). When weather permits, we will walk to, learn about, and work on neighborhood trees, community gardens and neighborhood green spaces. Kids will get really dirty and they will love it!
We intend to be outdoors as much and as often as possible, including hot, cold, windy, snowy and drizzly weather. So kids need to dress appropriately, including rain coats, rain boots, sneakers (no sandals), sun hats. During inclement weather (thunderstorms, heavy snowstorms, dangerous ice), we will be gardening indoors in a United classroom. In order to maintain an economically diverse group of gardeners, we have worked out a tiered pricing structure. Once everyone pays what they can, we can figure out how many spots can open up to families who need financial support. No explanation is needed if you can't afford the class. Hand sanitizer will be provided. Please pack sunscreen!
We offer two gardening/movement classes, one at 2:40pm-4:00pm and one at 4:05pm- 5:20pm, or your child can sign up for both from 2:40 - 5:20. Please note that if your child signs up for both, the first class will offer the "Don't tell me what to do!" option, where kids can choose between movement, homework help, nature art, DJ Reshad, clay play and just a little bit of nature and gardening and the second class is ALL gardening. If schools close due to COVID, all classes will resume in Von King Park, but homework help will not be an option. It will all be nature in the park 2:40pm - 5:20pm!
DATES: Nature and Gardening - Thursdays: (9 Thursdays)
April 7, 14, 28, May 5, 12, 19, 26, June 2, 16.

OPTION B: 4:05 - 5:20pm Nature and Gardening class $350 Warblers class! For kids coming from chess, etc...
OPTION C: 2:40 - 5:20pm (Both Nature/Gardening & choice time/movement classes) $700 Hawks class!

Rain or Shine*** (please see weather notes below)
BAD WEATHER and/or COVID closing:
*** We will nature rain or shine! But if there is pouring and/or torrential rain and/or dangerous weather, we will garden indoors in a United classroom. If schools close due to COVID, and weather allows, we will nature in Von King Park (after negative COVID test). On days when there is a perfect storm of bad weather and COVID closing, we will go remote and garden on Zoom. Supplies will be sent home to prepare for this possibility. This is unlikely, but we just need to put it out there.
COVID:
We have fun outdoors while following relevant COVID protocols! We disinfect tools between classes and provide hand sanitizer. On the registration form, please indicate whether you want your child to wear a mask outdoors.
DISMISSAL:
United garden entrance unless otherwise indicated due to bad weather or COVID closing.
EQUITY:
Equity requires effort. We cannot afford to give gardening scholarships without your help. Here’s how you can help:
Cost to pay for your child and support another: $450 (just the first class)
Cost for your child AND another to come for free: $850 (both classes)
Scholarship $0-$350 cost per child for families who need extra support. No explanation needed.
In our fall gardening program, more than 25% of our gardeners paid nothing. Thank you to the incredibly generous families who made this possible.
