After School Outdoors!
Nature and Gardening outdoors!
Kids will learn about amazing trees and delicious weeds! They learn to recognize and help native and endangered plants, grow and bring home delicious greens and explore the coolest plants, animals, and fungi in the great outdoors. Kids learn to grow mushrooms, make plant-based sprays and identify edible, invasive and poisonous plants. When weather permits, we will also walk to, learn about, and work on neighborhood trees, community gardens and neighborhood green spaces. Kids will get really dirty and they will love it!
We intend to be outdoors - (Prospect Park, Von King Park, Ft. Greene Park, school gardens, community gardens, etc... depending on the school and its proximity to green spaces) as much and as often as possible. This includes hot, cold, windy, snowy and drizzly weather. This is mainly a 1st grade - 7th grade program, but every school is different . We may be able to accommodate pre-K and Kindergarten at schools where we are primarily going to be gardening in an enclosed school garden.
We suggest signing up with a buddy or buddies (a pod) so your child is not in an unfamiliar group. We make every effort to keep the same schools, pods, classroom buddies and age groups together. We offer limited pick-ups at schools, including PS 321, United/PS 305, PS 133, PS 118, PS 9, PS 39 and PS 282. Note that we only offer pickups if we have a minimum number of 4 children from each school. If your child's school is not included as a pick-up option, parents and babysitters have the option of dropping off children at the park, including pod drop-offs. If you would like to add your child's school as a pick-up option for the following quarter, please email brooklynseeds@aol.com or text/call Eman @ 646-302-3149. If there is enough interest and passion for an outdoor nature program, we may also be able to create a school-specific program the following quarter.
HEALTH AND SAFETY
We have fun outdoors safely with face masks on, follow relevant COVID protocols and have regular health screenings.
SCHEDULE & COST:
Please click on the school or park below for details on cost and schedule.
If your school is not included, you can still drop your child off at the park for nature and gardening classes. Want us to pick up from your school? Please email brooklynseeds@aol.com.
NO HUNGRY KIDS
Please pack a full water bottle and a snack for your child. Some outdoor water fountains may be out of order and/or have been closed due to COVID.
WHAT TO WEAR
All kids must wear face masks and dress appropriately, including sun hats, rain coats, rain boots, snow boots, sneakers (no sandals), etc... No fancy outfits because they will absolutely destroy them when they jump into that mud puddle! Please dress for comfortable outdoor movement. We will sometimes be running or walking long distances as we study the mighty oak or the magnificent maple or our native bullfrog!
